Getting Started in No More Room in Hell 2
Survive your first Scenario deployment without wasting a Responder to greed or infection.
No More Room in Hell 2 punishes rushing. After the August 11, 2026 Armageddon release, you can play on Steam, Epic, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series in online eight-player co-op with cross-play — but every Responder still lives under permadeath. This beginner guide walks the first match loop: spawn, loot named locations, meet teammates, manage stamina in melee, and leave with a plan for extract and infection.
What your first match is actually about
Scenario mode is the default teaching ground. The map is dotted with points of interest. Normal named locations hide optional objectives that unlock safer rooms, better weapons, medical items, and supply crates. Critical POIs advance the mission toward final objectives and helicopter extract. Survival mode exists at 1.0; for day one, stay in Scenario until you can complete a clean run.
Your real win conditions on match one are simple: stay alive, find people, leave with supplies, and do not turn. Character power comes from extracting with loot and spending XP on skills later. Dying deletes that Responder. Treat every grab and scratch as a potential infection timer.
The opening loop at named locations
After spawn, open the compass with C. Note nearby named sites and Critical markers before you sprint. Move to the closest named location that looks quiet enough to clear. Finish the local objective instead of cherry-picking guns off the street — that is how you open stash rooms and meet other Responders on the same route.
Loot with a purpose. Prioritize a reliable melee weapon, a ranged option with ammo you can sustain, bandages, Phalanx Pills if you see them, and supply items that feed character XP on extract. Do not overload into a slow walk before you have teammates. Stamina is your sprint, shove, and swing budget.
Chain two or three named locations toward a Critical POI rather than bee-lining the red objective cold. Critical sites are where squads form and difficulty spikes. Arriving alone with a pipe and empty mags is how first characters disappear. For map context later, use Maps and Objectives.
Meeting teammates the safe way
You will not clear finales alone at full intensity. Watch the map for player icons as you approach popular POIs. When you get close, hold E to establish a VoIP link. Announce infection status, ammo needs, and which objective you are running. Share keys, codes, and meds when it keeps the squad moving.
If the lobby is quiet, still play as if help will arrive: leave doors readable, ping threats, and do not start noisy Critical steps until a small group is present. Deeper habits live on Co-op Teamwork. Keybinds across PC and consoles are on Controls.
Stamina and melee basics
Melee is the backbone of ammo-scarce fights. Swing with intent, reset between packs, and never empty your stamina bar in a crowd unless you have an exit. A stamina-starved Responder attacks slowly and cannot shove or sprint — that is when grabs stack and infection rolls begin.
Use the environment. Funnel infected through doors, fight on stairs where only one or two can reach you, and disengage when audio signals a denser wave. Guns are for emergencies, special infected, and objective spikes — not every shambler in a parking lot.
Infection and extract mindset from minute one
Any zombie damage or grab can infect you. Phalanx Pills suppress the infection for roughly five minutes so you can finish an objective or reach Experimental Gene Therapy, the actual cure. Do not tough out a late-stage turn next to the squad. Full detail is on How to Treat Infection.
Extraction is how you keep the character. Follow Critical POIs into the final objective chain, then the helicopter. If the deployment collapses to three or fewer living Responders, early green-hatch extract becomes available — it saves the character but forfeits character XP for that run. First-session checklist
- Confirm platform party and cross-play expectations with friends.
- Learn compass (C) and VoIP link (hold E).
- Clear nearby named locations before Critical POIs.
- Meet teammates early; do not solo finales.
- Watch stamina in melee; save ammo for spikes.
- Carry pills when possible; cure with gene therapy when infected.
- Extract properly and wait through the end screen.
Master that loop and every other guide on this wiki becomes actionable instead of theoretical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Responders preparing for the next deployment.
Should I rush the first Critical POI in No More Room in Hell 2?
No. Clear nearby named locations for gear and teammates first. Critical POIs spike difficulty and are safer with a formed squad.
How do I find teammates quickly?
Route through popular named locations, watch player icons on the map, and hold E nearby to open VoIP link for clear callouts.
What should I prioritize looting as a beginner?
A solid melee weapon, sustainable ammo, medical items including Phalanx Pills, and supply crates that matter for character XP on extract.
Is Survival mode good for brand-new players?
Learn Scenario extract and infection control first. Survival mode was added at 1.0 and is easier once you understand stamina, co-op, and extract habits.
Does dying delete my account progress?
Permadeath removes that Responder and their character-bound progress. Account XP from objectives is separate — see progression and skills guides for details.
